Sara Nishiura grew up in Detroit where she learned to sew from her mother and gained a love of geometry from her father. Her grandparents were great builders, painters, stitchers, weavers and gardeners who taught her that making things is one of the greatest imperatives, privileges, and pleasures in life. She works with vintage and recycled materials on 100% cotton new backings, hand quilting each piece. In this lecture and trunk show, Sarah will show us her incredible quilts and discuss their evolution within her quilting story.

Sarah Nishiura is a Chicago based quiltmaker who utilizes traditional techniques to craft quilts out of recycled and vintage materials. Inspired by numerous textile traditions including 19th and early 20th century American Quilts, Sarah's work explores and celebrates the infinite possibilities of geometric design. Her quilts have been exhibited in museums and galleries in the U.S. and abroad including the Iowa Quilt Museum, the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Art, the New England Quilt Museum, the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, and the Yokohama Quilt Fest in Japan. Her quilts have been featured in numerous magazines and blogs including Martha Stewart Living, QuiltFolk Magazine, Chicago Magazine, and Food and Wine, and they are included in private, corporate, and public art collections throughout the United States. Sarah’s work has been supported by grants from the Illinois Arts Council, the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Center for Craft. Sarah has an MFA in painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BA in visual arts from Brown University.

Finally put that embroidery unit for your machine to good use!

You will learn the basics of creating machine embroidered greeting cards. They can be personalized and made any time you find that you need a card.
You won't be able to make just one!

The best part is that making these cards is a perfect introduction to machine embroidery! Of course, there can be much more to it, but this will get you started.

$20 kit fee per student includes the cards, pre-cut fabric, cutting and embroidery files, templates.

Preparation & Supply List

You should have an embroidery machine with embroidery unit, 5" x 7" hoop, and thread. Have it set up when class starts. (Consult the manual, your dealer, the manufacturer's website, or YouTube for help.)

For many quiltmakers taking the leap from following a pattern to designing their own quilts is a daunting prospect. Beginning with an examination of some well-known, traditional quilt patterns, and moving through a series of hands-on design exercises, this workshop will introduce students to fundamentals of geometric quilt design, offer practical advice on ways to approach design, and also include exercises to help students develop their own designing voice. Recognizing that no two quilters are the same, the instructor will share the process she uses to design her quilts, while encouraging students to find their own way.

NOTE: this workshop is all about developing ideas for future projects, how much participants actually sew in class will vary with how quickly they work!

Part 1: Infinite Variety

We will kick things off with an icebreaker exercise which will require only paper, scissors, and glue. By working in such a direct way, participants will immediately begin to recognize that simple blocks can lead to complex designs. We will then move on to look at a range of examples of spectacular quilts and spend some time breaking down their magic by analyzing the building blocks that are at their foundation. Finally, Sarah will offer some insight into her own personal approach to design, and participants will spend some time considering ways to reinvent traditional blocks in order to come up with their own unique designs.

Part 2: Make It Your Own:

In the second part of the workshop, we will work with our block inventions from the first half of class to consider ways that these can be utilized to produce a finished, usable, and unique quilt pattern. Participants may work with fabric at this phase, or continue to work with paper and glue, drawing, or on the computer. The class will conclude with a final discussion in which we share our work and share ideas for moving forward with our designs.

Sarah Nishiura grew up in Detroit and now lives in Chicago, where she uses traditional techniques to craft one-of-a-kind quilts from her own designs. Sarah learned to sew from her mother and learned to love geometry from her father. Her grandparents were great builders, painters, stitchers, weavers and gardeners taught her that making things is one of the greatest imperatives, privileges and pleasures in life.

Sarah's quilts are all pieced from 100% cotton recycled and vintage materials, backed with new yardage, and then hand quilted. It can take up to 4 months to complete a quilt, but the result is strong, durable, and suitable for warmth or display.

English Paper Piecing or Foundation Paper Piecing? What's the difference? What are the pros and cons of each technique? Which technique is your favorite?

We will try to answer these questions as Tina shares dozens of quilts and many tips and tricks. Quilts from each technique will be pitted against each other and you will vote for your favorites.

At the end, we will tally up the votes and declare a winner!

“I started quilting in 1990 as an unemployed newlywed looking for something to do. I took a beginner sampler quilt class at Colchester Mill Fabric Store and haven't stopped stitching yet. I try to challenge myself to learn something new with every quilt.

When we moved to a seaside town in southern Rhode Island in 1997, Seaside Stitches was born. Back then, I was making and selling hundreds of paper-pieced quilt block lapel pins. Now, I prefer to teach you how to make your own!

I specialize in precision piecing (foundation paper piecing and English paper piecing) and domestic machine quilting. I enjoy learning new techniques and have even stepped out of my comfort zone to try art quilting.”

This class is designed for all skill levels.

We will cover fabric selection, fussy cutting, glue basting, back stitching and 3-D construction. We’ll explore fussy cutting using Tina’s EPP technique, The Wonder Window!

Bet you can't make just one!

The mandatory $5 kit fee per registered student includes pre-cut templates, color handout, Wonder Window, and postage. Kits will be sent to you individually directly from Tina. You should order your kit at least two weeks in advance to be sure to get it in time!
