Using the design and piecing techniques I rely on to create my giant gemstone quilts students will create their own singularly beautiful work of faceted light. Freezer paper piecing techniques are powerful techniques that can transform any quiltmaker’s ideas into reality. This is NOT foundation paper piecing! Instead, this is traditional piecing using freezer paper as your template.

Over the course of a single day-long session, students will learn how to:

• Create a freezer paper pattern based on a mock-up of a bite-size gem that I provide.
• Understand how different types of fabrics impact the flow of light and color across their design.
• Assemble the fabric facets to create their own 18”-square mini-quilt of faceted color.

MJ's passion is creating textile artwork inspired by faceted gemstones.

Her first book, Gemstone Quilts, was released by C&T Publishing in 2020. Her work has also been featured in periodicals published by both the quilting and jewelry industries.

MJ teaches classes regarding her technique and use of color throughout the United States and Canada.

She is the 2024 Quilt Arizona! keynote speaker.

This event is made available as part of the 2024 Quilt Arizona! show. 


Participants will receive free admission to the quilt show on Thursday evening (5pm -8pm).

  • AQG Members: log into your account on AQG's website to register for this event.  Class fee for members is $65
  • Non-members may attend for $80

 Cancellation Policy: 

  • Cancellations must be made online (no emails).
  • Cancellations 5 day (or more) before the scheduled event will receive an account credit.  The credit can be used for future AQG events.
  • Cancellations less that 5 days (120 hours) before the event are not eligible for a credit.
  • Refunds are not offered.
