How can you make a crazy quilt crazier? Add a few scrappy baskets on top of it!

In this workshop, early on the focus will be on fabric selection and design development. You will go through the exercise to find balance with textures and colors of small to large scale prints. Working with solids, the emphasis will be on value and contrast. You will learn to make crazy patch background with freeform blocks and string pieced baskets and their handles. Not interested in baskets? Try bowls, vases or something else. This workshop is a place to learn about scale, contrast, value, and selecting just the right fabric to brighten up the space.

Inspired by American Folk Art quilts, this block is perfect for spring or summer projects. The question one might ask is, if it’s possible to make a Sunburst block with Dresden Plate centers without any templates and applique. The answer is, yes!

This class is designed to focus on cutting multiple curves through layers of fabrics and sewing the pieces into Free Form flower blocks. It is easy and fast.

Sujata will share many tips on making the Pinwheel blocks and offer suggestions for color combinations and layouts during the class. You may not stop at just one.

      The Root Connection

      My Journey as a Quilter

      Quilt Arizona! Lecture

      Sujata Shah

      Friday, January 17, 2023

      10:00 -11:00 am

While growing up in India rich colors, hand woven textiles and hand-crafts were part of Sujata's daily life. She learned to appreciate the irregularities and imperfections of handmade crafts. Her instinctive ability to work with colors and textures combined with education in graphic design has helped her develop a unique style as a quilt designer.

Inspired by the utilitarian quilts and handmade crafts from around the world, she developed an abstract form of traditional quilt blocks and subsequently published the book; Cultural Fusion Quilts.

Presentation includes a slide show of her travels in India as well as her journey as a quilter. Slide show is followed by the trunk show of original quilts. She will share how she connects the dots between the memories of the past, and today's creative process.

How to Read a Quilt -

Finding Women's Stories in Antique Quilts

      Quilt Arizona! Lecture

      Lenna DeMarco

      Friday, January 17, 2025

      11:45am -12:45pm

Every quilt has a story, and one can find a lot of it if we know where and how to look.  Even if we know nothing about the maker a close examination of fabric, construction methods, pattern or block choices and quilting styles can tell us when the quilt was made, often where, what was the economic status of the maker and sometimes even how old she was.  This is quilt CSI.  In this presentation, we will look at quilts from the fanciest to the most humble and find out just what they have to tell us.  Audience participation is welcomed.

We have a limited number of opportunities for attendees to bring their quilt for some first-hand CSI - what can we read about YOUR quilt.  You MUST pre-register at this link https://arizonaquiltersguild.org/event-5940877   Please read the instructions carefully.

No registration required for the lecture.

      Stories in Stitches

      The Journey Continues

      Quilt Arizona! Lecture

      Sujata Shah

      Saturday, January 18, 2025

      10:00 -11:00 am

In this engaging presentation, Sujata Shah will explore how her journey in quilting has transformed her perspective on hand stitching. What began as a childhood dislike has evolved into her favorite method of crafting personal narratives onto quilts. Through 30 years of quilting, Sujata has discovered that hand quilting transcends the mere completion of projects; it’s a way to capture memories, maintain a daily journal of life, and ultimately create cherished family heirlooms.

Join Sujata as she shares a slideshow of her latest quilts, delving into the stories and inspirations behind each piece. This presentation promises to illuminate the deep connection between quilting and storytelling, offering a heartfelt glimpse into how each stitch contributes to a rich, personal tapestry of experiences and memories.

"Improv and Abstractions in   Antique Quilts"

      Zoom lecture by

      Marge Tucker

      Wednesday, February 12, 2025

      6:00 pm - 7:00 pm (Arizona Time)

Some of our quilting ancestors were ahead of their time!  We are not the first generation of quilters to discover improvisational quilting; but we may be the ones who have embraced it and made it mainstream.  In this trunk show, I display antique and vintage quilts that are improvisationally constructed.  I also show quilts that were inspired by my antique/vintage quilts.

So much inspiration and some great lessons can be learned from these graphic and abstract "antiques."

Marge Tucker is an international award-winning quilt artist with a focus on abstract improvisational design.  She pieces her quilts without a definitive image of what the finished piece will look like.  Starting with a general concept and color palette she then sees where the quilt takes her.

Marge made her first quilt over twenty-five years ago for friends expecting their first child.  At that time, Marge didn't know that quilting would become her               passion and profession.

Marge has received numerous awards for her quilts, including "Best Machine Quilting" at QuiltCon and "Best Sewing Machine Workmanship Award - Modern" at the Pacific International Quilt Festival, "Best Use of Color - Innovative" at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival, as well as "Best in Show" at the South Shore Fine Art Festival in Cohasset, MA.

Marge loves sharing the tradition of quilting with her students.  She teaches in person and online in her Rockland, MA studio and travels for in-person workshops throughout the United States.

I am living the dream! I get to spend my days working with beautiful fabrics, beautiful designs and beautiful people. AND I get to share about something I love.

I started working at a local quilt shop. Dream job! I was working with colors and fabrics and arrangements all day. Customers ask lots of quilting questions. I guess if you work in a quilt store, they expect you to know how to quilt, go figure. My manger said they needed someone to teach classes! Ohohoh! Pick me! Pick me!

Then, my manager called me said this fabric company wanted me to film a couple videos showing how to use their fabric. I about fell over!  I thought "YesIWantTo!!!" Then I thought, "Be cool, Jenny, be cool!". I said in a very calm voice, "Yes, I would love to.".

That is how I ended up here.
