What Ifs... Working in a Series

    Zoom lecture by

    Timna Tarr

    Thursday, April 10, 2025

6:00 pm to 7:00 pm (Arizona Time)

Why do artists work in series? Creating a series of quilts is a way to form a body of work, find and strengthen your artistic voice, help you focus, and add meaning to your work. Join Timna as she shares her own experience of working in series - some of which were planned, while others turned out to be quite accidental. The one thing they all have in common is that each collection started with the question of what if…?

    Learn more about Timna Tarr...
Timna studio .JPGTimna Tarr comes from a long line of quilters but did not begin quilting until after studying art history in college. She bought her first longarm in 2001 and began quilting clients' quilts shortly thereafter. Timna’s own nationally award-winning quilts are in private and corporate collections and been seen in exhibits, publications, and on The Quilt Show and Quilting Arts TV. Timna is a designer for Studio e Fabrics, the author of Stitched Photo Mosaic Quilting, and is an in-demand teacher and speaker. She lives in South Hadley, Massachusetts.

“My work is about color and small compositions. Each block in a quilt is made as its own element, independent of the other blocks. After all of the blocks are constructed, my goal is to arrange the small compositions to play off each other and work together to create a larger whole. What keeps me engaged is watching how the project changes and transforms with the addition of each color and texture.

“The resulting quilts are contemporary works, set in this time and place, which reference the rich tradition of quilt making.”

She began quilting 30 years ago and although she loved to create beautiful quilts, her love of art moved her into Fiber Arts, leading to the launch DJ’s Fiber Arts. (DJ is short for her first name, Debbie Jo).

She is an award-winning fiber and multi-media artist, creating fiber art, painting fabric, embellishing using different fibers and media such as silk, wool, paints, beads and more. Her motto is – “NO RULES, JUST ART”

    Minimal Design, Maximum Impact

    Zoom lecture by

    David Owen Hastings

    Thursday, May 22, 2025

    6:30 pm - 8:00 pm (Arizona Time)

The modern quilting movement is evolving and changing, but one thing remains consistent: simple, spare design combined with thoughtful quilting make an outstanding combination.

In this talk, David will share an overview of his process for coming up with simple graphic quilt designs, starting with stitched paper models (called maquettes).  He will show examples of how to translate an architectural photo into a quilt design and have many samples of mini quilts he has created using this process.  The techniques he presents are also great for making unique modern quilt block designs.  He will talk about walking foot quilting and how to break free from stitch in the ditch.

Come join us as we learn more about modern quilt design from one of the leading artists in modern quilting today.

    Inspired by Architecture

    Zoom workshop by

    David Owen Hastings

    Saturday, June 7, 2025

    9:00 am - 3:00 pm (Arizona Time)

    $50 for members

David will guide you through a creative process for designing your own modern abstract quilts, taking inspiration from architectural photos to develop dynamic and unique quilt designs.

    MONUMENTAL INSPIRATION WITH UNLIMITED POSSIBILITIES

Working from photos of architectural elements, David will guide you through the steps to design a mini modern fabric quilt… inspired by architecture! You will learn the quilt-as-you-go method, sewing the top pieces, batting and backing simultaneously. You’ll then add texture and complexity with David’s unique approach to walking foot machine quilting where the quilting lines become a major design element. Learn to connect multiple quilted units with a great gusset join technique, then add a simple faced binding for a modern finish.

    • Experiment with different elemental geometric shapes, including gentle curves.
    • Explore spare, simple compositions for a modern look.
    • Think about figure and ground.
    • Consider the sewing lines as a key design element.
This is an all-levels workshop.  You should be comfortable using your sewing machine, and it should be in good working order.  Basic knowledge of walking foot quilting is helpful, but not necessary.
