Color Play: Beyond Color Theory

Quilt Arizona! Lecture

MJ Kinman

Saturday, March 23, 2023

10:00 -11:00 am

Color plays a pivotal role in my gem quilts. Over the past 25+ years I’ve learned ways to approach color with confidence and I’m delighted to share these ideas with you in my one-hour lecture “Color Play: Beyond Color Theory”.

Using a standard color wheel, I’ll describe how our brains crave
harmony and why certain color combinations satisfy that craving.
We’ll then move beyond basic color theory to exploring how a color can “change” simply by being placed to other colors. Josef Albers, the great artist/instructor of the 20 th century, wrote about these ideas in his groundbreaking book Interaction of Color. However, they were introduced in the early 1800s by a scientist named Michel Eugene Chevreul.

During our time exploring how colors “play” with one another, I’ll show you how to create sparkle with value contrast and how to make quilts glow with saturation contrast. I’ll show you how to create effective transparencies, understanding how to achieve the illusion of fabric sliding over and under one another. Finally, she’ll show you how to change the appearance of a color just by changing its neighboring hue in multiple ways.

Why are these concepts important? I want to help you demystify the use of color, gain confidence in your color selection, and create brilliant quilts, regardless of your inspiration.
